*Shels Studio Report – The Amp Bunker.

Recording for *shels‘ 2nd studio Album is finally underway – having tracked the drums with Peter Miles (www.myspaace.com/petermiles) in the UK earlier this summer, the construction of a DIY studio at Shelsmusic HQ in Los Angeles commenced earlier this week.

Since we couldn’t escape into the wilderness to make this record as originally planned, we needed a sound-proof fortress built for the Peavey 5150, so we could blast the amp in peace without killing neighbours…  it’s called the amp bunker… kinda like a sex bunker.. but filthier and more brutal.

after a ton of blisters, splinters and a few tests, we’re happy to report it’s all working pretty well…  and we should begin tracking the first of the guitars tomorrow:)

for you gearslutz out there – you might be interested to know we’re using classical guitars through a 5150 combo dirty channel for our heavy guitar sound. The first 5 of you to email us at shels@shelsmusic.com after reading this will get to hear a sample 🙂

all hail the Amp Bunker of Doom!

If I was you I would on the first box put some empty egg box cartons inside there and then put cloth on it that would absorb the sound rather than reflect it back in. And then you would need less external boxes to soundproof. the config you got would be good for playing but your going to need to do some more mixing to get a more natural sound if you record from it.
Once had to soundproof a friends house so he could teach guitar in a terraced hoouse so no one could hear we used so many egg boxes it was not even funny then plaster boarded over top even doors pulled all floorboards and stuffed with sand but once done he could crank his amps to 11 and play as loud as he liked and noone could hear.
Good idea though just just add some sound absorbing in there for first part so it doesn’t reflect the sound too much.

thanks for the good advice. it’s actually sounding pretty sweet… doesn’t make a peep and the sound we’re getting is hot and sexy. we’re already through half of the guitars, so don;t wanna risk making any changes… we’re gonna keep the bunker for future recordings, so once this is all done, i’m gonna heed your advice and get those layers filled up as you suggested.

      thanks again!
